Peabody Garden Patrol

Garden Patrol Workdays -- February to May 2012

Volunteers are essential for the keeping Peabody Garden areas healthy and growing. Our Master Gardener Advisors (also volunteers) can always use help on each scheduled workday during the spring with routine and special maintenance. Please come and spend an hour or more working with the Master Gardener Advisors to learn about gardening first hand. The Master Gardener Advisors will spend time during each session discussing the learning aspects of the garden as well as answering questions about the school garden and gardening. The garden patrol has tools and gloves for volunteers to use.

Feeding Song Birds

The number of Eastern song birds such as finches, robins, cardinals, mockingbirds, and others are in decline.  The cause of this decline has been traced to the loss of plants found in forests and meadows -- the birds’ primary source of food, shelter, and nesting space.  Today, gardens like Peabody’s play a critical role in providing food, shelter, and nesting space for birds living on or visiting Capitol Hill.  Many of the flowering plants in Peabody provide seeds and berries for birds to eat. Other flowering plants along with many trees and shrubs provide insects for birds to eat. Great Volunteers Help Master Gardeners

The William Penn House, a Quaker Center on Capitol Hill sponsored two gardening workdays at Peabody this summer.  High school student volunteers from Florida, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Ohio worked with Master Gardener to secure fence posts in concrete, prime and paint them, and perform routine garden maintenance.   Ms. Copeland, Ms. Murdock, and Ms. Douglas-Williams also helped with the general weeding, moving and deadheading plants, and watering the trees planted by the students and Casey Trees in Fall 2008.

National Garden Club Award For Discovery Garden

The National Garden Club presented the attached Certificate of Achievement for Download Garden Club Award the creation of Discovery Garden at their national meeting in May 2009.
